The game

No base building. No resource race. Just the army you brought and the ground you fight on.

Last Tank Standing is a real-time tactics game about armoured warfare in an alternate 1920s. You command platoons of tanks, infantry and artillery, and try to get your guns onto the sides and rear of the enemy before they do the same to you.

You spend your budget on an army before the battle, then fight with what you bought. Most battles at the standard size are over in about five minutes; the biggest run up to a twenty-minute clock.

Pause at any moment and keep giving orders — or slow the war to half speed and watch it unfold.

How it plays

Read the ground. Win the flank.

A Karst medium platoon catches three red Compact heavy tanks side-on at the edge of a pine forest.

01 · Directional armour

Armour has a front, sides and a rear

Every armoured vehicle carries different armour on each face, and every gun has a penetration value. Hover an enemy with a squad selected and the game tells you which face you’ll hit — and whether you’ll get through.

02 · Squads

Platoons, not single units

Each unit is a squad of 2 to 16 vehicles or soldiers, and you watch it shrink as it takes losses. The Karst Dominion and the Iron Compact each field nine unit types:

  • Heavy, medium and light tanks
  • Tank destroyers and scout cars
  • Rifle squads and anti-tank teams
  • Mortars and howitzers — indirect fire with travel time and scatter

Most units carry one special ability on a cooldown — a sabot round, a smoke screen, a creeping barrage. Squads that survive gain rank mid-battle and shoot faster and truer.

03 · Fog of war

You only see what your squads see

Forests and towns hide units, ridges block line of sight, and rivers push armour onto bridges and fords. Scout cars and infantry find the enemy before their guns find you.

The AI plays under the same fog of war and gives the same orders you can. Hold more capture zones than the enemy and their tickets drain — so sitting back never works.

The Operation front map: blue Karst sectors on the left, orange enemy territory on the right, with three battlegroups and attack arrows.
04 · Operation mode

A whole front, one turn at a time

Operation mode is a turn-based front map between your headquarters and the enemy’s. Raise up to four armies at a depot and order each to attack, move or hold. Every attack is fought as a real-time battle, and whatever survives keeps its losses, kills and rank.

Sectors pay income and armies cost upkeep, so you can’t just keep buying. The enemy counter-attacks your weak points — and if your headquarters falls, the operation is lost.

05 · The Iron Wars

Three campaigns. One officer. Fifteen years.

Follow Dara Venn from border captain to general of the defense, across a war between the Karst Dominion and the Iron Compact — the foundry league that doesn’t declare wars, it buys them.

Missions earn up to three stars. Squads that do well become named veteran platoons and carry into the next mission; the ones you lose are listed in a memorial.

The Border War

The eastern marches rise in revolt — with rifles no march-town forge ever made. Peel the mask back, and force the Compact to stand and be beaten in the open.

The Iron Harvest

Strike first. Lead the spearhead into the Amber Marches and reach the Highwall before General Varga’s corps lands to “protect” it. Conquest does not stay clean.

The Long Watch

The Compact comes in person. Marshal-of-Iron Krieg lands on your coast, and there is nowhere left to fall back to. Hold. Turn. Break them.
